Illinois African-American
Economic and Social Empowerment Summit |
|
The Illinois
African-American Family Commission, in collaboration with the Illinois
Faith Based Association, Illinois Black Chamber of Commerce, Healthcare
Consortium of Illinois, Chicago Area Project, Black Executive Directors
Coalition and the Illinois African American Coalition for Prevention
hosted the “Illinois African-American Economic and Social Empowerment
Summit” at the Union Baptist Church in Springfield, Illinois on
Thursday, November 13, 2008 from 8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
The summit provided
a forum for African-American consumers, providers and leaders to help
formulate a social and economic development agenda that will empower
Illinois’ African-American families. The Empowerment Summit also
provided an opportunity for participants to voice their concerns about
the fair and equitable distribution of State funds to community
organizations and providers that serve the African-American community
and included discussions between legislators, state agency directors and
professionals in human services and economic development to educate
participants on how the global economy affects funding issues in
Illinois. The Empowerment Summit focused on five main issues: a)
Healthcare, b) Education, c) Criminal Justice - Reentry, d) Capital
Development Projects, and e) General Revenue Funds.
Participants
joined together in creating recommendations to improve the economic and
social well-being of children and families. Information from the
Summit will be used to develop public policies and programs to
effectuate a new economic and social paradigm for job creation, public
safety, business ownership, and quality education.
The Empowerment
Summit’s findings will be shared with you, policy makers, elected
officials, and community leaders.
